Bad Girl, Good Business

The 100 Years Club Installment #61: Mic Me Up!

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Since I launched my podcast in October, I’ve recorded 22 episodes, on topics ranging from creativity to penises and vaginas to home organizing to why your mouth matters to career transformation to dating >50 to gray divorce to travel.

I keep my podcast life somewhat separate from my “day job” (marketing and content strategy/writing), although aging is very much a part of all our lives.

Right now, we number about 123M and have the most spending power of any group.

And, let’s face it — we’ll all be in that demographic one day.

I resisted having a podcast for a long time, but then I looked at the stats (below).

The world has become uber-narcissistic and I didn’t want to join that group of selfie-obsessed people who wax poetic every day about what they’re wearing, what they’re putting on their faces, and how wonderful their (social media) lives are.

So, I designed my podcast to be about themes that impact many of our lives and (hopefully) will inspire other people (of all ages) to make changes — big and small.

And, even if they don’t make a change, I hope they will at least chuckle and nod. Or even get shocked and move on, because eliciting ANY human reaction is a skill.

I have learned at least one thing from every guest.

And I’ve discovered with practice how to interview and moderate better, becoming my own version of Howard Stern + Lois Lane + Heidi Klum + Betty White.

(I used AI to generate a composite image of that concept. It’s not exactly what I had in mind, but it’s pretty cool regardless.)

I’ve also learned how to pre-screen guests, focusing on those people who are fun, pithy, inspiring, and educational.

When a guest canceled for the first time, I freaked out a little. But then I gained more confidence in recording solo.

I also no longer critique my videos. So what if I look chubby or tired? No filters. Just me — unplugged.

I even had my first encounter with nasty trolls when a social media snippet was perceived as political. I suppose I should have been delighted that people were paying attention, but I’m not interested in attracting toxic energy.

If I offend you, please listen to someone else’s podcast. You won’t hurt my feelings.

My segments are short.

Some people have told me they’d listen longer, but frankly, I don’t have the time or the patience. I’m a short-form content chick. Always have been…always will be.

So, if you think you’d like to try your hand at hosting your own show, please get in touch. I can walk you through how to get started and help you find your inner voice (which is a key part of the podcess (the podcasting process).

And, I have 30 episodes left to record this year, so if you’d like to be a guest or have an idea for a show, I’d love to hear from you.

  1. Awesome photo of you, Nancy. So far, I do not do podcasts but that could change.

Wishing you the best with this adventure…your podcast.
