Bad Girl, Good Business

NancyAF’s Analog Day Off (& Grandma Hobbies) BOTS & BODIES #1

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Why am I writing about needlepoint in this new tech-related series?

Because balance isn’t just wellness advice. Anyone building in the tech space needs to look at how they are spending their time.

Human creativity, regulation, and insight don’t come from infinite screen time. They come from contrast.

I spent most of the past month on screens (big and small), working on my brands and business, and honing my own AI skills.

So, in honor of National Hobby Month (not that I really needed an excuse), I took the equivalent of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off in the tech ecosystem. “Cutting class” is always a naughty thrill, whether it means ditching school or leaving your devices at home or in your pocket.

My laptop was given a “time out” in the corner. I spent most of the day in the human world speaking with, talking to, and drinking/eating with others. My current hobby is needlepoint, and I stopped by my favorite haunt to fuel my analog passion.

I emerged refreshed and ready to chat with Beulah (my AI agent) again.

Some facts about the digital/analog balance

  • Too much screen time is linked to significant psychological impacts, including anxiety, depression, poor self-esteem, and social anxiety, fueled by social comparison and fear of missing out (FOMO). Even older adults are starting to be impacted by screen-related issues.
  • Can yarn extend your life expectancy and calm you down? Hell, yeah! And crafts and the term “Grandma Hobbies” are having a moment. But that moniker is actually a misnomer. A whopping 73% of new crocheters are under age 34. People of all ages are discovering the mental and health benefits of analog hobbies. These pastimes may prolong life expectancy by as much as 8 years. They also impact cortisol (the stress hormone) production.
  • Having conversations (live or voice-to-voice) with flesh-and-blood people is a whole different experience from online chats. Analog hobbies and real connections activate different neural pathways than digital tasks, which may explain why I felt sharper and calmer when I returned to my AI work.

And there is simply NO digital substitute for laughter, storytelling, and hugs.

I’m back to the digital planet, but calmer, happier, and with my human soul intact. I’m even going outside to enjoy the fresh air and buy laundry detergent at a store rather than ordering online.

Next, I’m off to a food conference. Although I’ll use digital media to share my adventures. no AI agent can replace salty chips and sweet snacks.

Ready to break a few rules with me and find your BODIES & BOTS balance?

Whether I’m chatting with Beulah (my AI agents) or weaving beads into a needlepoint canvas, I’m sharing the raw, real journey of tech-savvy longevity.

The future won’t be built by people glued to screens or by people who reject technology. It will be built by those who can move fluently between the two.
