The 100 Years Club Installment #40: How I Give a Hoot!

Someone recently asked if I am a snowbird (someone who leaves cold weather to settle in a warm climate for the winter months).

My life is much more freeform than that. So, I dubbed myself a “sun owl” instead.

Although I love sunny weather (and cheery people), I don’t travel to escape anything. I journey to head toward new experiences, joy, relationships, and insights.

Having a set travel schedule seems boring to me. I’m now in the mode of booking one-way flights.

Owls are very wise, and you rarely see them traveling in packs, following a formation or a leader. (Oddly, a group of owls is called a parliament. They are generally monogamous and don’t have a distinct pecking order.)

As I prepare for my next flight back east, I think about how I have broken away from my fear of the unknown (because, after all, fear is this month’s theme) and become more spontaneous at this stage of my life.

Now let’s get a little woo-woo.

Owls are often seen when people die, and that has proven true with my father and mother.

But back to pragmatism:

Travel is great for the soul, as I’ve written in previous posts. In fact, I just resurrected my travel website, BleisureLiving.com.

Here are things you can do if you’re interested in a sun owl lifestyle:

• Don’t be afraid to travel year-round. Look for deals and experiences in new places.
• Make plans to see friends and relatives when you’re flapping around.
• Attend events in other geographies and even consider long-distance dating (the topic of an upcoming The Geezer-Proofer podcast episode!)
• When you return from a trip or experience, ruminate on the wisdom you’ve gained as a result.
