Bad Girl, Good Business

The 100 Years Club Installment #145: Who Are Your Teachers?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

We all have those people in our lives who expand our worlds, impart valuable lessons, boost our spirits, and help us when we “fail a test.”

Looking back, many of us remember the favorite teachers who gave us a love of (or distaste for) a specific topic.

Teaching is both an art and a science, and it comes in many forms.

Back in the 1960s, teaching and nursing were the only two career options encouraged for girls. But then the tide shifted, and we were encouraged to become lawyers, doctors, and titans of industry.

Frankly, I like to teach and coach. I’m finally getting to do some of it here (aptly named “Skool”), and I’m heading back out on the speaking circuit in 2026.

Having great teachers can be life-changing, even as adults. This week, I moderated a digital panel with Carrie Kerpen and Amy Nelson about the realities of entrepreneurship. I sometimes sign up for random webinars related to cultural topics that grab me. Through chairing this event, I’ve met so many great people (and will hone my own “stage skills” as I moderate). At any age, we have things to learn. And, so many people are willing to give of their time and talents.

  1. Think about who the “teachers” in your own life have been and take time to thank them.
  2. Pinpoint what you’d still like to learn to improve your life or business, and find people you can learn from.
  3. Find a conference that interests you and take a “field trip.” (More on that next week!)
  4. Pay attention and take notes. Ask questions.
  5. Ensure that the people in your circle are also encouraging you to learn and grow.

If you love to teach others, find a way to flex your mentoring muscle. Knowledge is best when shared. And, if you wind up with a nasty or clueless teacher (like many of us did during our academic careers), transfer out of the “class!”

Today we are sharing 7 bad habits that may be making you an ineffective teacher. Reflect on this list to see if you have fallen into any of these habits and consider what changes you can make to improve your teaching and classroom culture. If you want ideas about how to improve as a teacher, you can find the post here: https://teach4theheart.com/the-7-bad-habits-of-ineffective-teachers/
